ZUSA apologises for late payments of match officials fees

The Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (ZUSA) official, James Chivivi, has apologised for the late payment of match officials fees, citing a communication breakdown Chivivi said ZUSA had tasked the local organizing committee to communicate the official payment plan to the match officals

The annual sports event for university institutions was marred with controversy after match officials ran amok following the delayed payment of fees.

The fracas happened yesterday evening after the conclusion of the 2023 edition of the ZUSA games held at the University of Zimbabwe.

The games started on Saturday.

Indications are that the organizers failed to pay the match officials in time, which resulted in chaos.

Some of the officials who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity said the association changed goal posts at the last minute.

“We were told that they would not be able to pay us our agreed fee. We had agreed on USD80 per day, and now they are talking about USD90, and to make matters worse, they want to give it to us at the inter-bank rate.

“We had a meeting with the ZUSA officials, but nothing was agreed on. All we want is our money.

“This is not the first time this has happened; the other time the money was paid after two weeks, some didn’t even receive their funds.”

However, Chivivi said they are processing the payments.

“We are working on it.  We had communicated with the local organising committee at UZ that we were going to pay the officials’ USD90 at interbank rate but it seems they didn’t pass on the communication.

“We only learnt about the whole issue yesterday evening that they had not told the officials about the initial communication and the whole group came to our office.

“I think another issue that might have caused the problem is that, the official had mistakenly compared the ZUSA games with the ZITCOSA games. The ZITCOSA games had a sponsor who paid the officials with USD.

“This is not the same case with us as the affiliation is also paid in in RTGS, so there is no way we can pay USD.

“So when we tried to explain this to the officials they became rowdy and were very angry. They could not even accept our apology.

“We take it upon ourselves for no making a follow up after the communication was send. On behalf of the organising committee there was no due diligence.”
