Zimbabwe has commemorated the International Families Day, a global event that identifies the importance of families as key building block upon which communities, societies and nations are built upon.
The day is celebrated every year on May 15 whilst this year’s national launch will be held on May 19 in Ward 14, Gwanda District in Matabeleland South Province.
Zimbabwe has adopted this year’s international theme “Demographic Trends and Families.”
Delivering the speech at a press conference in the city this morning Women Affairs Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Sithembiso Nyoni said the objectives for this year were to highlight the impact of changing demographic trends on the family unit among others.
The objectives for the commemorations this year are:
“To highlight the impact of changing demographic trends on the family unit and the importance of developing family-oriented policies that are adaptable to changing demographic realities.
“Evaluate the social and economic impacts of changing demographic trends on the family unit.
“Emphasise on the importance of mainstreaming changing demographic trends in development planning, implementation and evaluation.”
Minister Nyoni pointed out that Zimbabwe needed to consider these demographic issues so as to craft development programmes that are responsive to the needs of individuals, families, and communities as a whole.
“As a nation, Zimbabwe has not been immune to these demographic issues which affect various sections of the national population in many ways. A number of changing demographic trends in Zimbabwe have been emphasised in the 2022 National Census, and these issues need major consideration and inclusion within development plans by the Government of Zimbabwe and its development partners. This will help development programmes to be responsive to the needs of individuals, families, and communities as a whole.”
