Zim tech guru sours to Google VP position

Top Zimbabwean technology researcher scholar and author James Manyika has made national and technological history by being appointed as Google’s first Senior Vice President of Technology and Society.

Manyika will report directly to Alphabet’s (Google’s parent company) CEO Sundar Pichai and his work will focus on the impact of technology on society and the environment.

Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Manyika is a Prince Edward alumnus and did his first degree a Bachelor of Science honours at the University of Zimbabwe.

However his educational thirst was not quenched and he enrolled at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, where he graduated with a Master of Science in mathematics and computation, a Master of Arts, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

From there he distinguished himself as an information technology maestro where he became known as a consultant, researcher, and writer. His research into topics such as artificial intelligence, robotics automation, and the future of work is referenced in scholarly articles in reputable universities.

Of note is a book he published in 2015 titled No Ordinary Disruption: The Four Global Forces Breaking All the Trends.

Before his appointment at Google, he was the chairman and director of the McKinsey Global Institute and a senior partner at McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm, and a member of its board.

During his tenure as director and chairman of the McKinsey Global Institute, he researched and co-authored a number of reports on topics such as the future of work and workplace automation

Before joining McKinsey, Manyika was part of the engineering faculty at Oxford University

He also served in the Obama administration where he was the vice-chair of the United States Global Development Council at the White House
