The Zimbabwe U20 rugby team – the Young Sables – have won the hearts of local rugby supporters back home following their impressive performance at the world championships in Kenya.

Zimbabwe finished strongly in the tournament, thanks to a 64 – 10 win over Kenya in their final match at the Nyayo National Stadium in Kenya on 30 July.

The Young Sables were given a standing ovation by those who watched their final match after their display of an attacking, aggressive style of rugby.

The Zimbabweans dominated their opponents from the first whistle and eventually ran in a total of 10 tries during the one-sided match.

The result means Zimbabwe secured a fifth-place finish at the tournament after winning two of their opening matches and losing two.

The Young Sables started off their campaign with a loss to Scotland and Uruguay before defeating the United States and Kenya in their other two matches.

The two wins were received with much joy by Zimbabweans back home and other rugby supporters from around the world.

Local supporters, who took to social media platform Facebook, spoke glowingly of the Young Sables’ exploits during the competition.

“Well done Zimbabwe Rugby! Well done to the Young Sables!” said Moses Kondwe.

“Hats off to everyone involved in the team,” said David Hunda.

Sam Rousseau was equally ecstatic: “Amazing! Congratulations Zimbabwe.”

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) also posted a congratulatory message on their official Facebook Page.

“Congratulations to this crop of players, their technical team and everyone who played a role in this journey of completing a historic campaign with the best finish so far for their junior Sables.

Fifth position at the world rugby u20 championships,” said the ZRU in a statement.
