Woman injured in gunfire used as human shield

A Bulawayo woman was hospitalised at Mpilo Hospital after she was used as a shield during a shootout that occurred in Bulawayo.

This follows a gun battle that involved the police and armed robbers who were arrested over allegations of armed robbery which occurred at Insindi Ranch, Gwanda on July 30, 2023. Three family members were attacked before US$7 800.00 cash, jewellery worth US$200.00, a Bulawayo Agricultural Show Society trophy, ammunition, a pistol loaded with rounds Cadix revolver and an empty magazine were stolen.

The woman who was identified as Siwinile Ndlovu is the girlfriend of Simelweyinkosi Dube a member of the armed robbery gang.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commission Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of the suspects.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirms the arrest of Alex Cabangani Moyo (37), Vusumusi Moyo (27) and Mlungisi Sibanda (44) after a shout-out in Bulawayo,” he said.

On July 31, 2023, detectives from CID Homicide arrested Mlungisi Sibanda in Bulawayo City Centre, along Jason Moyo Street, between 9th to 10th avenues, after receiving information that linked him to the robbery case with the suspect implicating Alex Cabalangani Moyo which led to his arrest in Cowdray Park in Bulawayo on August 1, 2023.

Alex Cabalanga Moyo further implicated Mlungisi Sibanda leading to his arrest at a house in Nketa 9, Bulawayo after a shootout who then further went on to implicate Simelweyinkosi Dube (28) and led detectives to his girlfriend Siwinile Ndlovu’s residence in Cowdray Park in Bulawayo where Simelweyinkosi Dube managed to escape after a shootout after using his girlfriend as a shield in the shootout.
The police revealed that the arrest of the armed robbers led to the recovery of ammunition and an Agricultural Show Society trophy.

“The arrest led to the recovery of two pellet guns, a 9 mm Pak Relay Mod 92 firearm with five rounds and a Bulawayo Agricultural Show Society trophy,” Nyathi said.

ZRP unveiled that two detectives and the suspect’s girlfriend are admitted at Mpilo Hospital after they sustained injuries from the shootout.

“As a result of the shootout, two detectives, Detective Assistant Inspector Richard Charamba (47) and Detectable Constable Albert Madziva (41) as well as Siwinile Ndlovu were injured and are admitted at Mpilo Hospital.

Meanwhile, the police are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of Simelweyinkosi Dube who resided in Bulawayo for the law to take its course.
