Late Ndabaningi Sithole to be conferred hero status

The late Ndabaningi Sithole, a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s history and co-founder of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU), is set to be posthumously conferred with hero status by the Zimbabwean government tomorrow in Chipinge.

This recognition honors Sithole’s significant contributions to the country’s liberation struggle and his enduring impact on Zimbabwean society.

In a statement released yesterday, the Home Affairs Ministry outlined the programme’s events as follows:
“Official conferment of national hero status ceremony and laying of wreaths on the grave of the late REV Ndabaningi Chandiwana Sithole on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Freedom Farm, MT Selinda, Manicaland Province.

“The main event shall take place at Emerald Hill School in Mt. Selinda, Chipinge District.

“A private church service led by the (United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe) UCCZ shall be held at the family homestead. Only the guest of honour, senior government officials, party officials, and a few invited guests shall attend this ceremony.

“After the brief Ceremony, members of the public will be addressed at Emerald Hill School where the main event shall take place,” said the ministry.UCCZ is Sithole’s former church.

The separatist still commands strong sentiments in his former Ndau area in Chipinge.

Sithole’s intellectual prowess, leadership, and commitment to the liberation struggle earned him widespread respect and admiration. His strategic thinking and ideological contributions greatly influenced the direction of the independence movement and laid the foundation for Zimbabwe’s future.

The conferment of hero status upon Sithole represents a significant moment for Zimbabwe and its people. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for independence and the values they upheld. This recognition also holds historical and cultural significance, as it honour’s the memory of a key figure in the nation’s struggle for self-determination.
