President Emmerson Mnangagwa proposed 100 development projects to his “friend” President Xi Jinping of China,
resulting in the latter agreeing to some, the Zimbabwean leader said this week.

Speaking at the commissioning of Hwange Thermal Power Station Units 7 and 8 Expansion in Matabeleland on Thursday, President Mnangagwa expressed gratitude to President Xi Jinping of China for supporting Zimbabwe’s development initiatives, which included this transformative power project.

The US$1.5 billion project is a result of the loan that was secure by the government from China in 2018 and the project was successfully implemented by a Chinese contractor, Sinohydro Corporation.

“The successful completion of Hwange Units 7 and 8 Expansion showcases the strength of Zimbabwe’s bilateral relations with China and demonstrates the nation’s capacity to overcome challenges, even in the face of sanctions

“With the power supply now bolstered, the government aims to explore additional projects to further enhance power generation and potentially export electricity to the region to address energy deficits,” President Mnangagwa said.

He further said, “The project not only contributed to the country’s power infrastructure but also had positive social impacts.

The proposed projects span various sectors, including infrastructure, energy, agriculture, manufacturing, technology, and healthcare, among others.

“The plan seeks to leverage China’s expertise and financial resources to address key challenges and unlock the full potential of Zimbabwe’s economy. If realized, these projects are expected to create employment opportunities, boost foreign investments, and drive sustainable development in the southern African nation” He added.

President Mnangagwa, who has been vocal about his government’s commitment to attracting foreign investments, expressed optimism about the potential collaboration with China.

He highlighted that Zimbabwe is determined to strengthen its economy and achieve sustainable development through strategic partnerships.

“Zimbabwe is on a path of transformation, and we see China as an invaluable partner in this journey. Our proposal of 100 projects reflects our eagerness to collaborate with China across multiple sectors. By working together, we can build a stronger and more prosperous future for our nations,” Mnangagwa said
