Zimbabwe is where dreams and determination intertwine, an extraordinary tale of compassion and resilience
has unfolded, captivating the hearts of its people.

The protagonist of this narrative is none other than Themba Gorimbo, a Zimbabwean mixed martial artist
who has risen from humble beginnings to become a UFC sensation.

But beyond Gorimbo’s triumphs, it is the benevolence of a Hollywood icon, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, that has set Zimbabwe abuzz with gratitude and inspiration.

A Fighter’s Journey

In the remote district of Bikita, Zimbabwe, a young boy named Themba Gorimbo faced a life filled with hardship.

Orphaned at a tender age, he assumed the responsibility of caring for his siblings.

The struggle for survival led him to the perilous world of illegal diamond mining, where he endured a life altering encounter with the authorities. Scarred but undeterred, Gorimbo’s unwavering spirit pushed him to seek a better life beyond Zimbabwe’s borders.

Crossing into South Africa at a tender age of 17, Gorimbo found himself in the midst of a gruelling battle for survival.

He experienced homelessness, hunger, and the harsh reality of life on the streets. Yet,amidst the darkness, a flicker of hope emerged when he dis-covered a passion for mixed martial arts. Training diligently and mastering various
fighting disciplines, Gorimbo’s skills caught the attention of the combat sports world.

Themba Gorimbo’s dedication and prowess eventually earned him the title of the EFC welterweight champion.

This historic feat sparked a journey that led him to the ultimate stage in mixed martial arts – the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

In 2022, Gorimbo’sdreams came to fruition he was welcomed into the prestigious UFC roster.

On a remarkable night in May 2023, Gorimbo etched his name in Zimbabwe’s history books once again. Defying
the odds, he became the first Zimbabwean to secure a victory in the UFC, sending waves of pride and elation across the nation.

But it was not just Gorimbo’s prowess inside the Octagon that resonated with Zimbabweans; it was his
remarkable humility and generous spirit.

In the aftermath of his historic win, Gorimbo shared a candid revelation with the world. Before the fight, he had
a mere $7 in his bank account, and he slept on a couch in the gym due to limited resources and training space.

Yet, instead of basking in personal glory, Gorimbo selflessly auctioned off his UFC fight kit and directed the proceeds to an altruistic cause close to his heart.

With the money raised, Gorimbo initiated the construction of a bush pump in his impoverished village back in Zimbabwe.

This act of benevolence ensured access to clean water for his community, uplifting their spirits and brightening their future. News of Gorimbo’s selfless act traveled swiftly, reaching far beyond the borders of Zimbabwe.

It was in this context that the famous actor and philanthropist, Dwayne

“The Rock” Johnson, took notice of Gorimbo’s inspiring journey and kind gesture.

In a heartfelt video posted on Twitter, Johnson commended Gorimbo for his perseverance, resilience, and
dedication to giving back to his community.

“We’ve never met but I had to fly to Miami to look this man in the eyes, hug him and shake his hand. I’ve been moved & motivated by his story.

‘‘He recently won his first fight in the UFC. He had $7 bucks in his bank account when he won. He sleeps on a
couch in the gym. After the fight, he sold his fight gear (trunks & gloves) on line and made $7 000. Instead of using
the money to find a place to live, he built a bush pump so his village back in Zimbabwe can have clean water. He never asked me for anything, but I just wanted to help the guy out. $7 Bucks ya know. And I felt the MANA & emo-
tion in every hug Very good and very special day,” The Rock said.

Johnson’s words of praise and encouragement sent ripples of joy throughout Zimbabwe. Zimbabwean on Twitter praised The Rock for his generioisity towards Magorimbo.
