Diego’s ‘Wonder’ goal

He may not be the most prolific of scorers but Arthur ‘Diego’ Musiyiwa has developed a knack for finding the back of the net at exactly the right moment for his club Bulawayo Chiefs.

The 27 year old forward scored a wonder goal against Herentals in the final of the Chibuku Soccer Cup at Babourfields Stadium in Bulawayo, his first in the campaign and the decider which earned his club the coveted trophy.

The 38th minute strike earned Bulawayo Chiefs their first ever silverware in the history of the club since its promotion into the Premier League after being crowned Champions of the 2022 edition of the Chibuku Super Cup after edging Herentals 1-0.

The goal will certainly remain etched in the hearts and minds of Chiefs fans having been Musiyiwa’s first winner for the club and the first goal ever to secure silverware glory for the club since its promotion in 2018.

And Diego, as he is affectionately known by the fans and teammates alike, has taken time to reflect on the winning goal.

“There are no words to describe all the emotions. Scoring goals is the best moment for any football player because you sense the feelings of the fans, and you know how people sitting at home on TV feel too,” he said.

“People who know you too, you know they’ll be delighted for you, so in such a game the emotions are incredible. It was just amazing to score that goal. I am usually associated with the deciding goal, but for me it was more about being able to hold the cup in my hands.

“It was something very surreal. I couldn’t really believe it and that’s why I wasn’t that emotional. It was only after a few days when I realised, ‘Amazing, you made it!’; It wasn’t just my dream but for  the whole team

“It was a dream for everybody, and I knew it would make everyone else happy that I could fulfil that dream for them. I can’t really describe it in words. It’s something that will be with me forever. I’ll never forget what I achieved this year.

Musiyiwa said such moments also helped during more difficult phases too as one would be able to look back and remember that at some point you managed to achieve your greatest dream.

“There’s still a lot to come,” said Musiyiwa, who joined Chiefs in 2017 and helped the team earn promotion into the Premier Soccer League in 2018.

He is however keen on making a move.

“If an opportunity arises, I am eager to take it. It is time to develop as a player,” he said.
