China hails Nyasha Mushekwi

…As social relations with Zim highlighted on Chinese National Day

Zimbabwean international footballer Nyasha Mushekwi has been hailed as a model sportsman and face of foreign players plting their trade in China.

This was said by Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Zhou Ding during the 74th anniversary celebration of the founding of the People’s Republic of China at a ceremony in Harare on Friday.

Mr Zhou, in a widely ranging speech, outlined a number of cooperation areas between his country and Zimbabwe and dwelt in part on missions, private sector and individuals anchoring growing relations between the two countries.

“There are also outstanding Zimbabwean representatives of our brotherly relations,” Mr Zhou said.

“Mr. Nyasha Mushekwi, a Zimbabwean footballer born in Harare, has emerged as the top scorer in the Chinese Super Football League.

“He is now a hero of the city where he served, and a model of foreign footballers in China,” the envoy said.

Mushekwi plies his trade for Zhejiang football club since 2019 after breaking into the Chinese professional league Dalian FC in 2015.

Last year Mushekwi Zhejiang all-time leading scorer following raking up a tally of 41 goals.

This season, he has scored 14 goals and made two assists.

Mr Zhou revealed that besides sports, education was another highlight of social relations between the two countries which has seeen more than 3,000 Zimbabwean students have studying in China since 2018.

This, according to the Chinese diplomat, meant that the students became “a bridge and good-will ambassadors between our two great countries”.

Meanwhile, a number of cultural performances wowed the crowd at the Celebration Centre, as a visiting ensemble of Chinese artists undertook traditional musical, traditional and gymnastic displays, giving a glimpse into rich intangible heritage from the Asian country.
