Baba Harare, says aye to Papa Penny

Entertainment Review Writer

The countdown is on for the culmination of a project between Zimbabwe’s contemporary jiti musician Baba Harare and veteran South African artiste, Penny Penny.

Penny Penny was a towering regional figure in the mid-1990s with his disco beat that won hearts in Zimbabwe.

Three decades on, he is set to rekindle his romance with Zimbabwe through engaging Baba Harare – although it’s anyone’s guess how that’s going to sound.

But this week, the two musicians shared some warm love announcing the upcoming project.

Yesteryear great…Penny Penny

Papa Penny, as he is fondly known, said on Facebook: “This is Baba Harare from Zimbabwe (African brother) who is now currently staying in London. He will be in my country (South Africa) my province (Limpopo) my home town (Giyani) at my Place (ka Nkuti Sifasonke) on the 10th of October 2023. We will be doing a song together in my studio (Shakabundu Studio) Everything will be Aheeee”

In response Baba Harare said: “I grew up listening to Penny Penny Music so to be invited to his hometown of Limpopo is an honour to be invited to your palace kaNkuri Sifasonke. I cannot wait to come and learn from you.”

Papa Penny, whom the Guardian once described as enjoying a “late career renaissance” is also a reality TV star.

Zimbabwe meets South Africa; the old meet the new, jiti meets disco – and its all up in the air how this is going to sound.
